Les Olivettes is a bathing area located downstream of the Olivettes Dam on the Peyne river in the commune of Vailhan, in the Languedoc-Roussillon region. The site features two pebble beaches on both the right and left banks with a total bathing zone of 350 metres in length and 20 to 60 metres in width. The area is situated in a mountainous region characterized by vast natural forest spaces with minimal urbanization.

Water

The Peyne river. Bathing zone length: 350 metres; width: 20 to 60 metres. Right bank beach: 100 metres long, 5 metres wide, 500 square metres surface. Left bank beach: 60 metres long, 5 metres wide, 300 square metres surface. Pebbles and small stones compose the bathing zone. Slope is weak. No submerged vegetation; emergent vegetation includes poplars and ash trees.

Location

Commune of Vailhan, Hérault department, Languedoc-Roussillon region, France. Three parking areas with a combined capacity of 130 places are available on both banks. Easy access for all members of the public.

Facilities

Unguarded bathing site with no lifeguards. No sanitary equipment or showers. Four waste containers distributed across the parking areas. Picnic area available. Dogs are prohibited. Information panel displaying ARS water quality at each parking entrance.

Season

Summer season. Official monitoring conducted from June to August annually.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as good (Class A) for years 2006, 2007, 2008, and 2009. In 2010, classification was medium quality (Class B). E. coli testing results ranged from below 15 to 290 CFU per 100 ml. Enterococci testing results ranged from below 15 to 77 CFU per 100 ml. The surrounding land use presents no major potential factors for degradation of bacteriological water quality. The basin is a large non-urbanized territory.
