The Lescheraines bathing water is a recreational lake located at the Îles du Chéran leisure base in the commune of Lescheraines, Savoie. Created in the early 1970s as a gravel extraction site in the Chéran riverbed, it was substantially redeveloped between 2004 and 2007. The lake measures approximately 140 metres long by 70 metres wide with a water surface area of 8,600 square metres. Water depth averages 1.8 metres in summer, with transparency exceeding 1 metre. The facility includes amenities such as a wooden terrace, diving pontoon, rescue station, and recreational activities including a water slide and play areas.

Water

Recreational lake in gravel extraction site. Dimensions: approximately 140 metres long, 70 metres wide. Water surface area: 8,600 square metres. Average summer depth: 1.8 metres (±0.2 metres). Total bathing surface: approximately 3,600 square metres. Bathing zone between shore and 2 metres depth: approximately 1,920 square metres with volume of approximately 1,900 cubic metres. Summer water transparency: greater than 1 metre. Water residence time: approximately several days. Bed composition: coarse gravels and rocks with rolled gravel (30–60 mm). Maximum temperature occasionally exceeds 23°C in summer under clear conditions.

Location

Lescheraines, Savoie (73340), in the Chéran riverbed. The commune office is located at 1025 Route des Croës, Lescheraines.

Facilities

Wooden terrace, diving pontoon with depth greater than 3 metres, rescue station, sanitary facilities, water slide, play areas, bar-restaurant, sports field, changing rooms, multipurpose hall. A 'grand comfort' promenade accessible to people with reduced mobility encircles the bathing lake. Domestic animals are not permitted on the beach.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: E (maintained over the last 4 years). Nitrate levels in August: less than 5 mg/L NO₃. Orthophosphate levels in August: less than 0.02 mg/L PO₄. No temporary closure for bacterial contamination recorded in the last 4 years. No bacterial pollution detected at least once per season. No temporary closure for cyanobacteria proliferation in the last 4 years. No foam formation at water surface in summer. No fish mortality episodes in summer. Potential risk of bacterial contamination from accidental events (sewage pipe rupture upstream) or from exceptional climate periods with very high bather numbers. Potential eutrophication risk if temperature is elevated and nutrient thresholds are exceeded. Water renewal driven by permanent supply from a stream, springs, and the Chéran aquifer.

Potential bacterial contamination from accidental sewage effluent release upstream in the Chéran or from extreme weather events (flooding). Potential eutrophication risk under favourable conditions. Presence of aquatic bird colonies within 1 kilometre. Presence of macroalgae and macrophytes. No identified rodent presence near banks. No particular swimmer pathologies recorded in the last 4 years. Partial water circulation with low summer flow rate.
