Playa Abades (Los Abriguitos) is a coastal bathing beach located in the municipality of Arico on the island of Tenerife, Spain. The beach measures 166.52 metres in length and 44.73 metres in width, with golden sand substrate. The water body is classified as a natural shallow coastal surface water mass. The official bathing season runs from 1 June to 30 September.

Coastal water body classified as shallow natural surface water mass (ES70TFTI2 - Bajas del Puertito – Montaña Pelada). Bathymetry ranges from 0 to -10 metres. Water regime shows calm waters with tidal range of 1-3 metres. The beach is exposed to wave action. Golden sand substrate.

Location

Located in the municipality of Arico, Tenerife, in the autonomous community of Canarias, Spain. The nearest locality is Los Abrigos. Pedestrian access is available and rated as good. Vehicle access is not available. A car park is available and rated as good. Disabled access is available and rated as regular.

Facilities

Showers available. Foot washing facilities available. Sanitary attention available. Lifeguards present. Rubbish bins available. Permitted water activities include kayaking, jet skiing, canoeing, and surfing.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on evaluation of fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) collected over four years according to RD1341/2007. The underlying water mass ES70TFTI2 is in good ecological status (biological and physical-chemical) with overall good or better state. Microbiological contamination episodes occurred from 22-25 September 2014 and 20-22 July 2015, both of short duration.

Risks

One identified point source: Los Abriguitos sewage discharge line affecting Abades. Barrance La Brevala is a watercourse that may contribute contamination. Short-duration contamination risks include stormwater runoff from heavy rainfall carrying potential contaminants, and raw or treated urban wastewater from sewer breaks, failures, or unauthorised discharges. Cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium) proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
