Aguilar Beach is a 640-metre natural sandy beach with golden sand located in the municipality of Muros del Nalón, Asturias, in a rural setting surrounded by forest. The beach has a tidal range exceeding 4 metres and experiences medium wave conditions. Water renewal occurs in less than 7 days. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status since 2007 and consistently maintains excellent water quality with no significant pollution sources identified.

Water

Coastal water body, 640 metres long and 70 metres wide (highly variable). Natural sandy composition with golden sand. Macrotidal regime with tidal range exceeding 4 metres. Mean wind speed of 5.24 m/s. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Medium wave action. Current direction towards west-northwest.

Location

Located near the village of Aronces in Muros del Nalón municipality, Asturias, Spain. Accessible by road with parking for over 100 vehicles and pedestrian access. The beach is situated on the western coast of the Cantabrian region.

Facilities

Lifeguards, toilets, showers, disabled access, pedestrian and vehicle access, parking for over 100 vehicles.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for bathing. Microbiological monitoring at sampling point PM1 shows very good sanitary quality. No relevant pollution sources identified. Risk of contamination is very low. No episodes of historical contamination recorded. Two small streams enter the beach (Arroyo del Aguilar to the west and a second stream on the eastern margin) but present minimal contamination risk.

Risks

Low risk of macroalgae proliferation due to sandy substrate and beach orientation. Low risk of jellyfish blooms, though Portuguese Man o'War (Physalia physalis) and other species may occasionally occur, particularly in spring-summer months. Isolated jellyfish sightings recorded in 2016. No risk of microalgae or cyanobacteria proliferation. Minimal risk from harmful organism blooms.
