Playa Ajuy is a coastal bathing beach located in Pájara municipality on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 222 metres long and 60 metres wide with dark sand, boulders, and gravel substrate. The bathing zone is exposed to strong wave conditions with water depths ranging from 0 to 12 metres. The beach is situated in a natural coastal water body that maintains good ecological status.

Coastal water body classified as natural superficial coastal type. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to minus 12 metres. The water body is exposed to strong wave conditions. Tidal range is 1 to 3 metres. Substrate consists of dark sand, boulders, and gravel. Beach dimensions are 222 metres in length and 60 metres in width.

Location

Playa Ajuy is located in the municipality of Pájara on the island of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach has good pedestrian access and good vehicular access. Parking is available and rated as good. Disabled access is available but rated as regular.

Facilities

Public water fountain with drinking water available. Showers, foot washing stations, toilets, changing rooms, and rubbish bins are provided. Lifeguards are not present. Public telephone and public address system are not available. No umbrella, canopy, or sunbed rental services. No bars. Public health care facilities and doctors are not available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on evaluation of fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) collected over four years and assessed according to Spanish Royal Decree 1341/2007. The coastal water body ES70FVTI2 (Punta Jandía–Punta del Lago) is in good ecological status with good or better overall state according to the Hydrological Plan of Fuerteventura.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source from fishing activity. Point source pollution from Ajuy wastewater treatment plant (EDAR). Two watercourses (Barranco de Malpaso and Barranco de Aulagar) may contribute sporadic contamination. Short-duration pollution episodes may occur from stormwater runoff generating contaminants from upstream areas and from raw or treated urban wastewater. Episodes of cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
