Playa Alcaravaneras is a 430-metre-long coastal bathing beach located in Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach features fine golden sand substrate and is protected from wave exposure with calm waters. It is situated within the Port of Las Palmas water body, which is a heavily modified surface water mass. The beach supports various water and beach sports including snorkeling, kayaking, windsurfing, and volleyball.

Water

Coastal water body in the Port of Las Palmas. Depth ranges from 0 to -11 metres. Protected wave exposure with calm waters. Tidal range of 1-3 metres. Fine golden sand substrate. Water mass classification: ES70GCAMM_1 (heavily modified surface water) and ES70GC003 (underground northwestern water).

Location

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian access is good; vehicle access is regular. A maritime promenade is present. Parking is not available.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Public water supply available suitable for drinking. Showers, foot-washing facilities, toilets, changing rooms, waste bins, and medical attention available. Disabled access is good. No public telephone. No megaphone system. No bars. Umbrellas, awnings, and lounger rentals not available. Water and beach activities permitted include non-motorised boats, snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, skimming, diving, windsurfing, handball, football, and volleyball.

1 February to 30 November.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on evaluation of faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) collected over four years according to Spanish Royal Decree 1341/2007. Microbiological contamination episodes occurred in October 2016 (chemical), August-September 2017 (short-duration microbiological), October 2014-15 (short-duration microbiological). The coastal water body is in good ecological status.

Risks

Diffuse contamination sources from the Port of Las Palmas, Naval Arsenal, Real Club Náutico sports port, and Las Palmas Sports Port. Point source contamination from seven facilities including desalination plants, naval facilities, and relief systems. Watercourse: Barranquillo de Don Zoilo. Sporadic short-duration contamination expected from stormwater runoff caused by heavy rainfall. Unexpected short-duration contamination possible from raw or treated urban wastewater due to pipeline breaks, treatment plant failures, emergency discharges, and unauthorized discharges. Unexpected short-duration contamination possible from brine discharge and accidental hydrocarbon or organic waste spills. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
