Balerma is a natural coastal bathing water located in the Mediterranean Sea near El Ejido in Almería, Andalusia. The beach extends 2,044 metres in length with an average width of 40 metres and is composed of dark sand and gravel. It is an urbanized beach with moderate wave conditions and windy characteristics. The beach is highly occupied and provides full facilities for bathing.

Mediterranean coastal water in the Andean Mediterranean Basin water body (610016 Puerto de Adra - Guardias Viejas). Micromareal range of 0–2 metres. Moderately exposed to waves with dominant wave direction from the east and northeast associated with Levant wind. Current regime dominates toward the east, east-southeast, and east-northeast. Substrate consists of mud and sand. Water depth is characterized as deep.

Location

El Ejido, Almería, Andalusia. The beach is accessible by car and features a promenade along the coast. Parking is available.

Facilities

Red Cross station. Lifeguard service and rescue equipment. Signage for danger warnings. Toilets. Showers. Waste bins. Beach cleaning service. Disabled access available.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent water quality for all monitoring seasons: 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Microbiological contamination risk is low and short-duration (24 hours). Risk assessment methodology applied: deterministic standard UNE 150008.

Risks

Point source contamination: Balerma wastewater treatment plant (AL460). Diffuse source: agricultural land use, built surfaces, and altered land in the influence zone. Rambla del Loco watercourse. Low risk from jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae.
