Playa Barranquillo is a 75-metre-long coastal bathing beach located in Tías, Lanzarote. The beach features white sand and rocky substrate, with exposure to waves and calm water conditions. The water body forms part of the East Lanzarote coastal water mass, which maintains good ecological status. The beach is situated near Puerto del Carmen and is accessible by foot and vehicle.

Coastal marine water body (ES70LZTIV - East Lanzarote, natural surface coastal type). Bathymetry ranges from 0 to -13 metres. Tidal range 1–3 metres. Wave regime: calm waters. Substrate composed of white sand and rock. Water mass is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical).

Location

Located in Tías municipality, Lanzarote, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is near Puerto del Carmen. Parking available with fewer than 50 spaces. Pedestrian access is easy; vehicle access is available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on analysis of faecal indicator bacteria Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci collected over four years, in accordance with RD 1341/2007. The surface coastal water mass ES70LZTIV is in good ecological state with overall status of good or better.

Risks

Identified pollution sources: submarine outfall at Puerto del Carmen; discharge at Playa Barranquillo; wastewater treatment plant at Hotel San Antonio; wastewater treatment plant at Hotel Las Costas. Potential short-duration pollution from rainwater runoff carrying contaminants and raw or treated urban wastewater (outfall ruptures, sewer network failures, emergency overflow, unauthorised discharges). Sporadic episodes expected with duration less than 72 hours. Fitoplankton blooms (Trichodesmium cyanobacteria) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
