Cala Forn is a small U-shaped cove in L'Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona, naturally delimited by rocks on both sides and situated in a residential setting. The beach has an average width of 75 metres and a length of 54 metres, with fine sand sediment. Summer occupancy at Cala Forn is high. The cove experiences moderate continental influence and is part of water body C32 in the Catalan coastal zone.

Mediterranean Sea. Sandy beach type. Surface area: 3,803 m². Average width: 75 metres. Length: 54 metres. Fine sand sediment with median grain size (D50) of 0.23 mm. Moderate water entry gradient. Coastline evolution: −2.69 metres per year. Hydrographic basin: Rieres de Calafat-golf de Sant Jordi (224 km² surface area). Water mass C32: sandy, moderate continental influence. Average water temperature: June 22°C, July 25.7°C, August 25.8°C, September 24.5°C. Mean salinity range: 34.5–38.3 psu. Significant wave height: 81 cm; mean period: 5.24 seconds; most frequent direction: E. Predominant wind direction: NW (weak). Predominant sea state: slightly rough (arrissada). Low hydrological response velocity index in the zone.

Location

L'Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona, Baix Ebre comarca, Catalonia, Spain. The bathing zone code is ES51400013M43013B. Cala Forn is located at the end of the Cala Forn ravine, which does not discharge to sea even during heavy rainfall.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental control conducted during 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Monitoring and water quality control conducted by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control: weekly analysis (all Saturdays) of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental control: minimum 3 weekly inspections assessing transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Additional monitoring programmes include phytoplankton bloom control (since 2000), macroalgae community surveillance (since 1997), and jellyfish presence surveillance during bathing season. Daily aerial inspection and cleaning vessel patrols conducted for prevention and quality improvement.

Risks

The bathing zone is monitored for phytoplankton proliferations, which are a natural phenomenon occurring frequently in some beaches during summer. Most proliferations form only coloured patches and pose no risk to swimmers. Toxic species are managed through established protocols. Jellyfish surveillance is conducted during the bathing season. Hydrocarbon presence is monitored, and toxic substance analysis is performed when necessary.
