Cala Rovira is a sheltered cove located in the municipality of Castell-Platja d'Aro in Girona province, Spain, within the semi-urban environment of the Platja d'Aro coastal area. The beach has a surface area of 9,309 square metres, is 237 metres long, and features very coarse sandy sediment. It is bounded to the north by a rocky shoreline with numerous small coves and to the south by Punta del Cavall Bernat, which separates it from Platja d'Aro beach. The cove experiences high occupancy during summer months.

Water

Mediterranean Sea inlet of shallow rocky type (C14 Begur-Blanes water mass, classified as deep rocky type with low continental influence). Average salinity ranges from 36.8 to 38.5 practical salinity units. Water temperature: June 20.6°C, July 23.4°C, August 23.8°C, September 22.3°C. Significant wave height 0.87 metres, average period 5.55 seconds. High hydrological response index during rainfall episodes. Freshwater inputs from Riera de Can Carboner and a small stream north of the beach during rain events.

Location

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks. Environmental control includes minimum 3 weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators tested weekly include Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental control parameters monitored include water transparency, colour, floating human debris, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Catalan Water Agency (ACA) conducts control and monitoring programmes for phytoplankton proliferation and macroalgae communities.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme in place to detect potentially toxic algal species. Discharges from the Castell-Platja d'Aro wastewater treatment system located south of Platja d'Aro beach. Rains trigger freshwater inputs from Riera de Can Carboner and a northern stream that are inspected for potential impacts on water quality.
