Cala Vienesos-Platja dels Espenyals is a semi-enclosed beach located at the northern end of Miami Platja urban area in Mont-roig del Camp municipality, Tarragona. The beach is formed by small coves surrounded by cliffs and is situated close to Estany Salat, a Mediterranean lagoon included in the Inventory of Wetlands of Catalonia. The beach has low occupancy levels. The bathing area measures 27,278 m² with an average width of 35 m and length of 700 m. The beach has medium sand sediment with a mean grain size of 0.45 mm and a steep water entry slope.

Location

Mont-roig del Camp municipality, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located at the northern end of Miami Platja urban nucleus. Coordinates: UTM X:329757 Y:4542044 (EU50).

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks during bathing season. Microbiological monitoring: weekly (Saturdays). Environmental monitoring: minimum 3 weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Monitoring conducted by Agência Catalana de l'Aigua (ACA). Bathing water quality assessed according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental control evaluates water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Wastewater from Mont-roig del Camp coastal area (population: 10,292 inhabitants; equivalent population: 48,100 h-e) treated at EDAR Mont-roig del Camp with secondary biological treatment. Effluent discharged to sea via principal submarine outfall (Emissari Estany Gelat, 1,900 m length, 31 m depth) and emergency outfall (Emissari Cristall, 490 m length, 9 m depth).

Risks

Barranc de l'Estany Gelat located approximately 100 m northeast of the bathing zone normally does not discharge water to sea but flows into the beach during heavy rainfall.
