Playa Caleta de Arriba, also known as Caleta de Soria, is a coastal bathing beach located in Gáldar, Gran Canaria, in the Canary Islands. The beach is 40 meters long and 10 meters wide, featuring a substrate of boulders and rocks. It is exposed to strong waves and has a tidal range of 1–3 meters. The water body is a natural coastal surface water mass classified as Northwest Coastal type.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) measured over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The coastal water mass ES70GCTI1 is in good ecological status with an overall state of good or better. No specific water quality classification result is stated in the profile.

Risks

One point source of pollution: Caleta de Arriba septic tank and Caleta de Soria wastewater treatment plant (EDAR). Short-duration contamination episode occurred on 12–13 September 2011 with microbiological contamination. Risk of short-duration contamination from raw or treated urban wastewater (pipe breaks, sewer network failures, emergency overflows, unauthorized discharges) with unpredictable occurrence and duration less than 72 hours. Episodes of cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
