Playa Candelaria is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 355 metres long and 15 metres wide with dark gravel and sand substrate. It is exposed to strong wave conditions and is situated in a water body classified as ES70TFTIV - Punta del Rosquete – Bajas del Puertito, with depths ranging from 0 to 15 metres. The beach is managed according to Spanish bathing water quality standards and is monitored for microbiological contamination during the official swimming season.

Coastal water body, ES70TFTIV - Punta del Rosquete – Bajas del Puertito water mass. Depth range 0 to 15 metres. Substrate consists of dark gravel and sand. Wave exposure is exposed with strong wave conditions. Tidal range is 1 to 3 metres. Length 355 metres, width 15 metres.

Location

Playa Candelaria is located in the municipality of Candelaria on the island of Tenerife, in the province of Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian and vehicular access to the beach are both available and in good condition. Parking is available and in good condition. Disabled access is available but in regular condition.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on analysis of fecal contamination indicators Escherichia coli and Enterococcus intestinalis collected over four years according to Royal Decree 1341/2007. The coastal water mass ES70TFTIV is in good ecological status. Contamination episodes occurred in 2012, 2012–2014, and November 2020 involving sewage discharge and diffuse microbiological contamination.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources: fishing port of Candelaria and La Galera Sports Club. Point pollution sources: EBAR relief valve at municipal car park; EBAR San Blas relief valve; San Blas treatment plant; Candelaria or San Blas outfall; EBAR relief valve at municipal swimming pool. Watercourse: Barranco de Los Guirres. Episodic contamination risks include sewage discharge from broken outfalls, urban sewage overflow, accidental hydrocarbon spills, and stormwater runoff from heavy rainfall. Short duration contamination episodes expected with unpredictable frequency, duration typically under 72 hours. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes (Trichodesmium) recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
