Playa Castello is a natural coastal beach in El Franco, Asturias, measuring 400 metres in length with a variable width of approximately 20 metres. The beach comprises boulder substrate and is situated along the Western Cantabrian coast. Water quality monitoring over the last 10 years has consistently classified the bathing waters as excellent, with no observed pollution sources nearby. The beach is surrounded by coastal cliffs and rocky outcrops and is located within protected natural areas (ZEPA and ZEC Peñarronda-Barayo).

Risks

Jellyfish occurrences are possible during spring-summer months, though episodes are infrequent. Portuguese man o'war (Physalia physalis), sailfish (Velella velella), sea nettle (Pelagia noctiluca), and moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) have been recorded in Asturian coastal waters. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low, occurring naturally during storms with short duration. No microalgae or cyanobacteria proliferation risk identified. Overall contamination episode risk is null.
