Castillo de Macenas is a 650-metre beach located in Mojácar, Almería, within the Cabo de Gata-Níjar Natural Park on the Mediterranean coast. The beach features a mix of gravel and dark sand with an average width of 60 metres and moderate wave conditions. It is naturally influenced by deep sandy waters with a micromareal regime and currents predominantly flowing eastward. The beach is lightly urbanized and accessible on foot or by car.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water body with deep sandy substrate and gravel/rocks. Micromareal regime (0–2 metres tidal range). Currents dominant towards the east, east-southeast, and east-northeast. Moderate wave exposure with waves predominantly from the east and east-northeast associated with Levante winds.

Location

Located in Mojácar, Almería, Andalucía, Spain, within the Almería coastal area. Accessible on foot or by car. The nearest sports port is Garrucha, 15 kilometres away.

Facilities

Red Cross post, lifeguard equipment, surveillance equipment, signage including danger warnings, bins, and cleaning service. No disabled access, toilets, showers, mooring zone, water sports rental, nautical club, or scuba diving zone.

Water Quality

Classified as excellent water quality for all monitoring seasons (2012–2015). Microbiological contamination risk is low and of short duration (24 hours). Low risk from jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae.

Risks

Diffuse pollution sources from land use, built-up surfaces, and altered areas in the surrounding zone. Ephemeral watercourses (ramblas) from Macenas, Cueva Negra, and Cañadicas may contribute short-duration microbiological contamination.
