Coastal maritime water body in the Cantabrian Sea, part of the Suances estuary (Ría San Martín). Chlorophyll a concentration in the coastal water station is approximately 2.5 µg/l. Phytoplankton density in Cantabrian estuaries is homogeneous with very low densities below 5,000,000 cells per litre.

Sanitary discharges from the Vuelta Ostrera wastewater treatment plant and multiple relief overflows (Sorravides, Matadero, Viveda, Polanco) continuously affect water quality. Contaminant concentrations regularly exceed directive limits at the monitoring point.

Risks

Sanitary discharges systematically elevate contaminant concentrations. Isolated emergency episodes may occur. Future quality changes possible due to the Vuelta Ostrera wastewater treatment plant demolition ruling. Six urban wastewater discharge points identified, including continuous and random discharges.
