Playa La Cueva is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of La Gomera in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 240 meters long and 23 meters wide, with fine dark sand substrate. It is exposed to wave action but experiences calm waters, with a tidal range of 1-3 meters and bathymetry ranging from 0 to -30 meters. The official bathing season runs from 1 February to 30 November. Submarking activities are permitted at this location.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococcus indicators according to RD1341/2007. The coastal water body ES70LGTI - Salinas – Corralito is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with an overall state of good or better. Monitoring is conducted according to official protocols.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source: Port of San Sebastián de La Gomera (vessel cleaning activities). Point pollution sources: El Palmar thermal power plant discharge, EBAR San Sebastián, EBAR San Sebastián overflow, San Sebastián outfall. Potential contamination episodes: storm water discharge from heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater (outfall breaks, sewage network failures, emergency discharges, unauthorized dumps), thermal power plant discharge (urban, industrial wastewater and brine), accidental hydrocarbon or organic waste discharge and vessel cleaning. Cyanobacteria proliferation episodes of Trichodesmium occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae.
