Playa El Cura is a coastal bathing beach located in Mogán, Gran Canaria, Spain. The beach is 193 metres long and 34 metres wide, with dark fine sand and boulder substrate. It is protected from wave exposure and experiences moderate wave conditions with tidal ranges of 1 to 3 metres. The beach sits in a southwest-facing coastal water mass classified as being in good ecological status.

Protected from wave exposure with moderate wave regime. Tidal range 1 to 3 metres. Substrate: dark fine sand and boulders.

Location

Mogán municipality, Las Palmas province, Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian and vehicular access are both available in good condition. A promenade is present. Parking is available in regular condition. Disabled access is available in regular condition.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on microbiological evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci indicators over four years according to RD1341/2007. The coastal water mass ES70GCTII is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with an overall state of good or better. No previous contamination episodes recorded in Náyade.

Risks

Identified point sources of contamination include: septic tank at Playa del Cura, submarine outfall at Playa del Cura, desalination plant at Playa del Cura, sanitation network, brine discharge from desalination plant at Playa de Tauro, and drainage system from treatment plant at Playa de Tauro. Two watercourses: Barranco Playa del Cura and Barranco de Tauro. Foreseeable short-duration contamination: occasional stormwater discharge from heavy rainfall lasting less than 72 hours, untreated or treated urban wastewater from outfall ruptures or network failures lasting less than 72 hours, and brine discharge from desalination plant lasting less than 72 hours. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No risk from macroalgae. Cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium) occurred in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017.
