Azkorri is a natural beach located between Punta Galea and Punta Azkorri in the Cantabria-Matxitxako coastal water body. It measures 844 metres in length and has an active surface area of 96,374 square metres. The beach is composed of sand and gravel, features abundant dune vegetation alternating with fossilised sandstone rocks, and is frequently exposed to strong waves. It is considered ecologically interesting and hosts moderate weekend usage with low weekday occupancy.

Water

Coastal water body of the Cantabria-Matxitxako water mass. Length 844 metres, average width 68 metres, low tide surface 96,374 square metres, high tide surface 51,774 square metres. Tidal range 4.80 metres, minimum tidal height 1 metre. Water renewal time equal to or less than 7 days. High exposure to wave energy.

Location

The beach is located in the municipality of Getxo, Bizkaia province, in the Santa María neighbourhood. It is accessible by vehicle and on foot, with a parking area providing 1,000 spaces.

Lifeguards (2), Hondartzainas (2), public toilets (6), washbasins (2), changing rooms, showers (3), drinking fountains (1), bins (32), information panels (12), public address system, first aid kit, medical equipment available by telephone, lost children bracelets, children's play areas, sports area, bike racks.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for the 2008–2010 bathing seasons is Excellent according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Public Health Authority of the Basque Government conducts water quality monitoring. Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations remain below sufficiency thresholds.

Risks

Possible contamination sources of low significance include water from the Ibaizabal estuary and the Superpuerto potentially affecting the beach through marine currents, occasional pollution episodes from port vessel movements, and sediment dredging discharge from Bilbao port off the Sopelana coast. Domestic animals are prohibited during the bathing season.
