Platja de Garbet is a sheltered beach in Colera, Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, in northeastern Spain. The beach has a mean width of 31 meters and a length of 449 meters, with very coarse sand sediment. It is situated in a semi-natural environment with only a restaurant and camping facility nearby. The beach experiences high summer occupancy.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water mass C1 (Portbou-Llançà), classified as a rocky deep-water mass with moderate continental influence. Mean water temperature ranges from 19.6°C in June to 22.1°C in July and 21.4°C in August. Mean salinity ranges from 36.0 to 38.6 psu. Significant wave height averages 0.61 meters with a mean period of 5.82 seconds. The area experiences high hydrological response velocity (VRH index) during rainfall episodes.

Location

Colera municipality, Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located on the Mediterranean coast facing east.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci weekly. Environmental inspections evaluate water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The Colera wastewater treatment system (EDAR) serves 941 residents with 7,400 equivalent inhabitants capacity, providing biological treatment with direct discharge to the coast at the Colera port breakwater. Since 2009, some treated water is reused for non-potable urban purposes.

Risks

The Garbet stream (riera de Garbet) occasionally discharges runoff water at the left end of the beach. Phytoplankton blooms are monitored as a natural phenomenon that can occur frequently in summer; most form only colored patches posing no risk to swimmers, though toxic species trigger management protocols. Jellyfish presence is monitored during the bathing season. Hydrocarbons and other harmful substances are checked when detected.
