Platja de Grifeu is a sandy beach located in the municipality of Llançà in Alt Empordà county, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in an urban-residential setting, flanked by rocky areas to the north and south. It has a moderate influence from continental freshwater and experiences mild wave conditions. The Grifeu stream occasionally discharges fresh water into the central part of the beach.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach is 147 metres long with an average width of 37 metres and a surface area of 5,795 square metres. The sediment is medium sand with a mean grain size (D50) of 0.44 millimetres. Water entry has a very steep slope. The coastline is retreating at an average rate of 0.97 metres per year. Average water temperature: June 19.9°C, July 22.2°C, August 21.6°C, September 20.2°C. Mean salinity range: 35.5–38.5 psu. Significant wave height: 0.61 metres with a mean period of 5.82 seconds. The water mass belongs to the Portbou-Llançà type, classified as rocky deep with moderate continental influence.

Location

Llançà, Alt Empordà county, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is approximately 1000 metres north of Llançà port.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks during this season.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) in accordance with Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes assessment of water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The monitoring authority is the Catalan Water Agency (ACA).

Risks

The Grifeu stream occasionally discharges fresh water at the central part of the beach. The area is subject to phytoplankton bloom monitoring during bathing season. Potential risks from hydrocarbon contamination and other harmful substances are monitored.
