Platja de l'Estany is a semi-sheltered beach located in L'Ametlla de Mar, Tarragona, in Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 184 metres long with an average width of 29 metres and covers an area of 5,203 square metres. It is naturally delimited at both ends by rocks, with the Estany port at its left end. The beach has moderate summer occupancy and is situated in a semi-natural environment south of the L'Ametlla de Mar town centre.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The beach is part of water body C32 (L'Ametlla de Mar - Catalan basin of the Ebro), classified as a sandy, shallow type with moderate continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 34.1 to 38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 23.4°C, July 25°C, August 26.6°C, September 25.2°C. Wave height: 81 cm significant wave height with an average period of 5.24 seconds. The beach has a very steep water entry slope. Sediment is very coarse sand with median grain size (D50) of 1.66 mm.

Location

L'Ametlla de Mar, Baix Ebre comarca, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located south of the L'Ametlla de Mar town centre, in the Mediterranean coastal area.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control: weekly. Environmental control: minimum three weekly inspections. Total monitoring duration: 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is controlled by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring is conducted weekly during the bathing season, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspections occur a minimum of three times weekly, evaluating water transparency, colour, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach's wastewater is treated biologically at the L'Ametlla de Mar treatment plant and discharged at sea via the Alguer outfall (1,200 metres long, 25 metres deep) located at Platja de l'Alguer.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during the bathing season; most form only coloured patches and pose no risk to swimmers, but toxic species trigger a management and information protocol. The Estany stream provides freshwater only during heavy rainfall; the port is normally saline. Hydrological response velocity is low.
