Platja de la Gola is an open beach located in Torroella de Montgrí, Catalonia, Spain, in a semi-natural environment of dunes. The beach is 2,200 metres long with an average width of 60 metres and a total surface area of 111,612 square metres. It is bounded to the north by the mouth of the Ter River and to the south by the mouth of the rec del Molí. The beach has moderate summer occupancy levels.

Water

Open Mediterranean beach. Length: 2,200 metres. Average width: 60 metres. Surface area: 111,612 square metres. Sediment: medium sand (median grain size D50 = 0.33 mm). Water entry slope: very steep. Coastal line evolution: −5.12 metres per year. Mean salinity range: 23.0–38.3 psu. Significant wave height: 0.61 metres. Mean wave period: 5.82 seconds. Predominant wave direction: north. Water body mass: C11 Torroella de Montgrí (deep sandy type of moderate continental influence).

Location

Torroella de Montgrí, Baix Empordà region, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is bordered by the Ter River estuary to the north and separated from Platja del Grau (Pals municipality) to the south by the rec del Molí estuary.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring: weekly (Saturdays). Environmental monitoring: minimum of three weekly inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is assessed according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring measures Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Water quality classification results are determined weekly and published. Environmental monitoring evaluates water transparency, colouration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The beach receives significant permanent water input from the Ter River at its left extremity. The rec del Molí also permanently discharges water into the bathing zone. Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored during the bathing season; most form only coloured patches in the water and pose no risk to swimmers, though toxic species are monitored through a specific management and public information protocol.
