Platja de les Delícies is a beach located in Sant Carles de la Ràpita, a municipality in the Montsià comarca of Tarragona province, Catalonia. The beach is situated in an urban environment and is enclosed by rock groynes at both ends, making it somewhat sheltered. It has a sandy bottom with medium-grain sand (D50 = 0.31 mm) and experiences high summer occupancy. The beach is part of the Badia dels Alfacs water body, which has elevated continental influence.

Water

Mediterranean Sea, Badia dels Alfacs bay with elevated continental influence. Beach dimensions: average width 35 m, length 320 m, total surface area 11,649 m². Water temperature ranges from 24.4°C in June to 27.5°C in July and August, declining to 25.8°C in September. Salinity range 23–36.8 psu. Significant wave height averages 81 cm with mean period 5.24 seconds. Water entry slope is steep.

Location

Sant Carles de la Ràpita, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 15,511 inhabitants. The beach is located in the Mediterranean coastal zone within an urban setting.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring occurs for 17 consecutive weeks with weekly microbiological sampling (Saturdays) and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored weekly for microbiological indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes visual inspections of water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, and hydrocarbons. The monitoring programme complies with UNE-EN ISO-9001:2000 certification.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored as a natural seasonal phenomenon that may occur during summer months. Some species can be toxic; a management and information protocol exists to warn the public if toxic species are detected. Environmental inspections assess the presence of marine debris, hydrocarbons, and other harmful substances.
