Playa de Llorell is a coved beach located in Tossa de Mar municipality in Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The 325-metre-long beach has an average width of 37 metres and is situated in a semi-natural and residential setting surrounded by forests and cliffs. The beach experiences high summer occupation rates. It is bounded by Cala de's Rajols to the north and Playa de Portopí to the south.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing area belongs to water body C14 (Begur-Blanes), a rocky deep-water mass with low continental influence. Mean salinity ranges from 37.3 to 38.5 psu. Water temperatures: June 20.1°C, July 23.1°C, August 24.1°C, September 23.0°C. Significant wave height 0.69 metres with mean period of 6.2 seconds. Predominant sea state: rippled. Two streams feed the beach: the temporary Torrent de Garbí and the permanent Torrent de Llevant, both discharging at the beach extremes. The beach receives contributions from the Rieres del Cap de Begur-Blanes river basin (336 km²).

Location

Tossa de Mar, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is located at the boundary between Tossa de Mar and Lloret de Mar municipalities. Nearest towns: Tossa de Mar (5,845 inhabitants) and Lloret de Mar.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological control is conducted weekly over 17 consecutive weeks during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological monitoring (Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci) is conducted weekly. Environmental control includes assessment of water transparency, colouration, floating solids of human origin, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The bathing area has low continental influence.

Risks

The beach receives surface water discharge from two torrents (temporary and permanent streams). A phytoplankton monitoring programme is in place to detect and control harmful algal blooms, which are natural phenomena that may occur frequently during summer months. Most blooms only cause coloured patches in the water and pose no risk to swimmers.
