Sa Conca is a sandy beach located in the semi-urban area of s'Agaró within the municipality of Castell-Platja d'Aro in Girona, Catalonia. The beach measures 394 metres in length with an average width of 42 metres and a surface area of 16,204 square metres. It features very coarse sand with a steep water entry gradient. The beach has high occupancy during summer months and is bordered to the northeast by rocky outcrops connecting to the port of Aró marina and to the southwest by cliffs of the s'Agaró urbanization.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal water. Water body code: C14 (Begur-Blanes). Rocky deep-water type with low continental influence. Mean salinity range 36.9–38.4 psu. Water temperature: June 20.4°C, July 23.5°C, August 24.0°C, September 22.1°C. Predominant sea state: rippled. Significant wave height 0.87 metres with mean period 5.55 seconds, most frequent direction NNE. Hydrological response velocity index: high. No natural water course discharge to the beach.

Location

Castell-Platja d'Aro, municipality in Girona, Catalonia, Spain (population 10,150). Located within the urbanized area of s'Agaró.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly during 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control conducted weekly, testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental control includes minimum three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring programme active to detect potentially toxic algal species. Macroalgae community surveillance programme in place.

Risks

Phytoplankton proliferation monitoring is conducted during bathing season as algal blooms are a natural phenomenon that may occur frequently in summer, though most cases pose no risk to swimmers. Hydrocarbons and other harmful substances are monitored.
