San Lorenzo is an urban beach in Melilla, Spain, located on the Mediterranean coast. The beach is 240 meters long with an average width of 95 meters and is composed of fine golden sand. It is sheltered by the outer breakwater of the sports marina and positioned at the left bank of the Oro River mouth. The beach experiences calm sea conditions with wave heights typically below 1 meter in the bathing area.

Water

Mediterranean Sea coastal waters. Surface area: 22,600 square meters. Beach slope: 1 percent. Mean salinity: 37.7 ppm. Mean water temperatures range from 15°C in winter months to 22.8°C in summer months. Average annual wave height: 0.3 to 1.2 meters with mean wave period of 7 seconds. Currents at the beach front are practically negligible. The water body is sheltered and has a gentle transverse slope.

Location

Melilla, Spain. The beach is accessible from the Maritime Promenade with easy access. An unguarded car park is available. The nearby Noray sports port is located 1.2 kilometers away via the Maritime Promenade.

Toilets, foot showers, showers, waste bins, cleaning services, lifeguards, life-saving equipment, parasol and hammock rental, children's zone, sports zone, restaurants and food establishments, disabled access, signage. No public telephone. Blue Flag beach designation.

Water Quality

Water quality classification: Excellent. Microbiological parameters (Escherichia coli and Enterococos) measured at control point show 95th percentile values consistently below thresholds for excellent classification. Visual water quality is rated as good. Water is normally transparent with natural coloration. Transparency was good 90.91 percent of days in 2014, 81.82 percent in 2015, and 50 percent in 2016. Color was good 100 percent of days in all years. Water clarity may temporarily decrease during storms or heavy rainfall due to sediment resuspension.

Risks

Potential contamination factors of low frequency and low impact include rainfall and urban sewage. Rain events may increase water turbidity due to sediment resuspension from the Oro River mouth. Floating marine and terrestrial vegetation, plastics, and other solids may appear during adverse weather in low quantities. Natural foam is infrequent and hydrocarbon presence from vessel discharge is practically absent.
