Sant Feliu beach is a sheltered urban beach located in Sant Feliu de Guíxols in the Baix Empordà region of Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 465 metres long with an average width of 35 metres and covers 18,477 square metres. It features very coarse sand and a steep water entry gradient. The beach is bordered to the north by Sant Feliu port and to the south by rocky outcrops with small coves, and experiences high occupancy during summer.

Water

Mediterranean Sea bathing area belonging to water mass C14 Begur-Blanes, classified as deep rocky type with low continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 36.3 to 38.3 psu. Mean water temperatures: June 20.7°C, July 23.6°C, August 24.0°C, September 22.4°C. Significant wave height averages 0.87 metres with mean period of 5.55 seconds. Predominant sea state is flat with weak northwesterly winds.

Location

Sant Feliu de Guíxols, Baix Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has a population of 21,726 inhabitants. More information available at the municipal website.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological monitoring conducted weekly on Saturdays. Environmental inspections conducted minimum three times weekly during the 17-week monitoring period.

Water Quality

Water quality is monitored according to European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators monitored are Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Weekly analysis and multiple environmental inspections per week assess transparency, coloration, floating solids, vegetation residues, foam, phytoplankton blooms, hydrocarbons and jellyfish presence. Water quality results are published weekly.

Risks

The Riera del Monestir is the only natural watercourse that discharges into the bathing zone during rainfall. Phytoplankton proliferations are monitored; these can appear as coloured patches and are generally natural seasonal phenomena with low risk to swimmers in most cases. Hydrocarbon monitoring is conducted.
