Playa del Barco is an artificial sandy beach in Cartagena on the Mediterranean coast. The beach is 400 metres long with an average width of 8 metres and golden sand composition. Water renewal occurs in less than 7 days. The beach experiences high occupancy and serves approximately 1,386 maximum bathers daily in a recreationally isolated setting.

Water Quality

Water quality was rated as excellent during 2000–2008. Quality assessment was not performed in 2009 due to insufficient samples. Water quality was rated as excellent in 2010 and 2011. No significant pollution pressures identified in the adjacent area.

Risks

Toxic phytoplankton proliferation is a natural phenomenon that rarely affects public health or ecosystems. Sampling in 2008 and 2009 showed practically no presence of potentially toxic cells. Risk level: null or very low. Jellyfish appear seasonally, with maximum abundance between early spring and late summer. Short-duration episodes are unlikely.
