Platja de l'Àliga is a small pebble beach located in the municipality of El Perelló in the Baix Ebre region of Tarragona, Catalonia. The beach is naturally bounded by rocks at both ends and situated in a largely natural environment. It has a low occupancy level during summer months. The beach measures 110 metres in length with an average width of 9 metres and a surface area of 966 square metres.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. Sandy beach with very coarse sand (D50 grain size 1.66 mm). Semi-enclosed beach type with eastward orientation. Water body classification C32 (L'Ametlla de Mar-Conca Catalana de l'Ebre): sandy, shallow type with moderate continental influence. Average water temperatures: June 22.4°C, July 26°C, August 25.7°C, September 24.5°C. Mean salinity range 28.5–38.5 psu. Significant wave height 81 cm, mean period 5.24 seconds, most frequent direction east. Predominant sea state: slight chop. Prevailing winds: northwest, light intensity.

Location

El Perelló, Baix Ebre comarca, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. The municipality has 3,235 inhabitants.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted for 17 consecutive weeks.

Water Quality

Water quality monitoring is conducted by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA) according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control includes weekly testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental inspection occurs minimally three times weekly, evaluating water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

The Àliga stream (barranc de l'Àliga) reaches the beach and discharges during heavy rainfall through a railway bridge. The beach is subject to monitoring for phytoplankton proliferations and jellyfish presence. Coastal line is eroding at a rate of 0.54 metres per year. Water entry has a steep slope.
