Platja del Port de la Vall is a cove beach located in El Port de la Selva municipality in Alt Empordà, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is 195 metres long with an average width of 26 metres and covers an area of 5,002 square metres. It features coarse sand and a steep water entry slope, situated in a semi-urban residential setting with a campground nearby. The beach experiences high summer occupancy and forms part of a rocky coastline dotted with small coves.

Water

Mediterranean Sea. The bathing zone belongs to water body C2 (Portbou-Llançà), classified as a deep rocky type with moderate continental influence. Average salinity ranges from 35.2 to 38.6 psu. Water temperatures average 20.1°C in June, 22.2°C in July, 21.7°C in August, and 20.5°C in September. Predominant sea state is rippled with significant wave height of 0.61 metres and mean period of 5.82 seconds. The Riera de la Vall stream provides surface water contributions at the right edge of the bathing zone.

Location

El Port de la Selva municipality, Alt Empordà county, Girona Province, Catalonia, Spain. The beach is situated in a residential area with nearby camping facilities.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring occurs during 17 consecutive weeks, with weekly microbiological testing on Saturdays and minimum three weekly environmental inspections.

Water Quality

The bathing water is monitored by the Catalan Water Agency (ACA). Microbiological monitoring includes weekly testing for Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Environmental monitoring includes at least three weekly inspections assessing water transparency, coloration, floating solids, marine vegetation, phytoplankton, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. The beach is served by the Port de la Selva wastewater treatment system, which provides biological and tertiary treatment for approximately 10,500 population equivalents, discharging treated effluent to sea via submarine outfall during summer months (June-September) or to the Riera de Romanyac during winter months (October-May).

Risks

The bathing zone is subject to high hydrological response velocity (VRH) during rainfall episodes. The area is monitored for phytoplankton proliferations as part of a dedicated surveillance programme. The zone receives surface water input from the Riera de la Vall.
