Platja del Port is a semi-enclosed urban beach in Llançà, Girona, located in a bay protected by a port breakwater. The beach is 361 metres long with an average width of 24 metres and covers an area of 8,647 square metres. It has a very steep water entry gradient and is situated between the Riera de la Valleta stream to the north and the port of Llançà to the south. The beach experiences high occupancy levels.

Mediterranean Sea. Semi-enclosed beach in a bay. Water body type: rocky with moderate continental influence. Salinity range: 28.5–38.6 practical salinity units. Average water temperature: June 20.1°C, July 22.4°C, August 21.2°C, September 20.5°C. Significant wave height: 0.61 metres with average period of 5.82 seconds. Predominant sea state: calm. Wind direction: north, weak intensity. Hydrological response velocity index: high.

Location

Llançà, Alt Empordà comarca, Girona province, Catalonia, Spain. Municipality population: 5,082 inhabitants. The beach is located in an urban and port environment, protected by a port breakwater in the bay.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks during this season.

Water Quality

Monitoring conducted by Agència Catalana de l'Aigua (ACA). Water quality assessed according to EU Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological indicators tested: Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Monitoring frequency: weekly microbiological sampling (Saturdays) and minimum three weekly environmental inspections. Environmental parameters assessed include water transparency, colour, floating human debris, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence.

Risks

Riera de la Valleta discharges freshwater almost permanently into the bathing zone at the left end of the beach. Phytoplankton proliferation is monitored as part of a dedicated surveillance programme; most occurrences form coloured patches without risk to swimmers but toxic species trigger management and warning protocols. Hydrocarbons and other hazardous substances are monitored and analysed when detected.
