Playa del Sur is a bathing beach located in Peñíscola, Castellón, in the Valencian Community of Spain. The beach has a closed cove configuration with perpendicular breakwaters and a rigid seaside promenade. It is bounded to the north by Peñíscola's port area and to the south by a natural zone of rocks and cliffs. The beach has a high density of swimmers during the bathing season.

Coastal marine water body. High accumulation coast type. Beach length 466 m at high tide, average width 59.1 m. Sand composition. Current direction south to north. Microtidal range. Located in the Júcar hydrographic demarcation.

Water Quality

Water body status classified as very good under the Water Framework Directive. Weekly inspections conducted during bathing season assess visual inspection parameters, water appearance, and sand cleanliness. Environmental control point established at Acequia del Rey (103 m south of the beach). Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci are monitored parameters.

Risks

Acequia del Rey (Royal Irrigation Channel) discharges at the southern limit as a natural watercourse of mixed origin with continuous discharge at medium risk level. Potential short-duration contamination factors from rainfall (low frequency, mild impact), urban sewerage (low frequency, mild impact), and coastal discharges (low frequency, mild impact) identified. Rivers/canals, industrial installations, port installations, and diffuse pollution all assessed as low frequency with mild impact.
