Platja del Torn is a semi-enclosed beach located in the municipality of Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant in Tarragona, Catalonia, within the natural space of the Rojala. The beach is 1,400 metres long with an average width of 82 metres, naturally delimited at both ends by rocks. It is composed of very coarse sand and has low summer occupancy. A naturist camping area is located on the left side of the back beach.

Water

Mediterranean Sea bathing area. Beach surface area 95,291 square metres. Average width 82 metres. Length 1,400 metres. Very coarse sand sediment (D50 grain size 1.37 mm). Moderate water entry gradient. Coastline evolution 0.03 metres per year. Water mass designation C31 (sandy, shallow, low continental influence). Mean salinity range 36.4–38.4 psu. Water temperatures: June 21.9°C, July 25.4°C, August 25.6°C, September 24.4°C. Predominant sea state rippled. Significant wave height 81 cm, average period 5.24 seconds, most frequent direction east. Predominant winds northwest, weak intensity. Low hydrological response velocity index.

Location

Vandellòs i l'Hospitalet de l'Infant municipality (population 5,754) in the Baix Camp comarca, Tarragona province, Catalonia, Spain. Located within the Rojala natural space.

Season

First week of June to third week of September. Microbiological and environmental monitoring conducted over 17 consecutive weeks during this period.

Water Quality

Water quality monitored under European Directive 2006/7/CE. Microbiological control conducted weekly during bathing season, measuring Escherichia coli and intestinal enterococci. Environmental control includes minimum 3 weekly inspections evaluating transparency, coloration, human-origin floating solids, marine and terrestrial plant remains, foam, phytoplankton patches, hydrocarbons, and jellyfish presence. Phytoplankton bloom monitoring programme in operation since 2000.

Risks

Two small streams on the right side of the bathing area do not discharge water to the beach even during heavy rainfall. Phytoplankton bloom monitoring programme established to detect and control algae species that may pose health risks to persons and affect marine ecosystems.
