El Carmen is an urban beach in Barbate, Cádiz, extending 1,255 metres in length with an average width of 40 metres. The beach features golden sand composed of fine material mixed with rocks, and experiences moderate wave conditions with exposure to westerly winds. It is situated on the Atlantic coast of Andalucía and designated as an existing bathing water area with coastal water classification influenced by Mediterranean waters.

Water

Coastal Atlantic waters influenced by Mediterranean waters. Shallow waters with sandy substrate mixed with rocks. Mesomareal tidal range of 2–4 metres. Current regime is predominantly towards south, south-southeast, and southeast. Wave exposure is moderate to high with dominant westerly winds and secondary southeast winds.

Location

Located in Barbate, Cádiz province, Andalucía, Spain. Access is on foot. The beach is part of the Litoral de Cádiz area and has a maritime promenade with walkways. A sports port (Puerto Deportivo Barbate) is nearby. The area is highly occupied with urban infrastructure.

Facilities

Red Cross station, lifeguard equipment, surveillance equipment, toilets, showers, waste bins, beach cleaning service, water sports equipment rental, disabled access, signage, and danger warning signs. Maritime promenade and walkways are present.

1 June to 30 September

Water Quality

Water quality classifications: Sufficient (2013), Good (2014), Excellent (2015 and 2016). Microbiological short-duration pollution risk of moderate degree (24-hour duration). Contamination sources include diffuse sources from land use, constructed and altered surfaces, and the Río Barbate river. Barbate wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Barbate CA518) is identified as a point source. Low risk for jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae proliferation.

Risks

Microbiological contamination risk from wastewater treatment plant discharge and river inputs during short-duration pollution events. Moderate wave conditions and windy environment.
