El Charcón is a natural Mediterranean coastal bathing beach in Mijas, Málaga, measuring 930 metres in length with an average width of 12 metres. The beach features sandy and rocky composition with moderate wave conditions and shallow waters. It is a semi-urbanised beach with medium occupancy levels, located within the protected area ZEC Calahonda.

Water

Mediterranean coastal water body with shallow bathymetry and sandy substrate. Micromareal tidal range of 0–2 metres. Current regime dominates towards the northeast. Wave regime dominated by easterly and east-southeast winds associated with levante wind. Moderate wave exposure.

Location

Mijas, Málaga, Andalucía, Spain. Access is available on foot and by car. The beach is situated along the Málaga coast near the town of Mijas.

Facilities

Red Cross post, lifeguard service, surveillance equipment, signage, toilets, showers, waste bins, cleaning service. No disabled access. No maritime sports facilities or diving zone.

Water quality classification: Excellent for seasons 2013–2016. Microbiological short-duration contamination risk (24 hours) rated as low. Identified pollution source: EDAR Cala de Mijas wastewater treatment plant (urban treated discharge). Risks from jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae all rated as low.
