Playa Esmeralda is a 680-metre long coastal beach located on the island of Fuerteventura in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 60 metres wide with fine golden sand substrate and benefits from protected wave exposure and calm waters. It is designated for bathing from 1 February to 30 November annually.

Water

Coastal marine water body. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to -2 metres. Tidal range is 1-3 metres. Waters are tranquil with protected wave exposure. Substrate consists of fine golden sand. Part of the ES70FVTII water mass (Punta Entallada – Punta de Jandía, natural surface coastal water) classified as being in good ecological state.

Location

Playa Esmeralda is located in the municipality of Pájara on the island of Fuerteventura, Canary Islands, Spain, near the locality of Costa Calma. Pedestrian and vehicular access are available but in poor condition. Parking is available but in poor condition.

Facilities

Bars available. Parasol and lounger rental available. Trash bins available. Toddle rental status not reported. No lifeguards, medical attention, doctors, public telephones, megaphones, showers, foot wash stations, services, changing rooms, or disabled access. No public water supply or drinkable water available.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci indicators collected over four years in accordance with Royal Decree 1341/2007. No previous contamination episodes are recorded in the Náyade system.

Risks

One identified point source: EDAR Risco del Gato wastewater treatment plant. Possible short-duration contamination risks include raw or treated urban wastewater from pipe breaks, sewage network failures, overflows, emergencies or unauthorised discharges (unforeseen, less than 72 hours duration). Brine discharge from injection wells (unforeseen, less than 72 hours duration). Cyanobacteria Trichodesmium proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
