Playa Las Galletas is a coastal bathing beach located in Adeje municipality on the southern coast of Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach measures 100 meters in length and 50 meters in width with a substrate of dark gravel and sand. The water is characterized by calm conditions with wave exposure ranging from exposed to protected. The bathing area is situated in a natural coastal water body with good ecological status.

Natural coastal water body. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to -4 meters. Wave regime consists of calm waters. Wave exposure is exposed-protected. Tidal range is 1-3 meters. Substrate is dark gravel and sand. The water mass is classified as ES70TFTV_1 - Montaña Pelada – Barranco Seco.

Location

Las Galletas, Adeje municipality, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. Pedestrian access is regular and vehicle access is good. Parking is available and is of good quality.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on microbiological indicators including Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci evaluated over four years according to RD 1341/2007. The surface coastal water body is in good ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with an overall good or better state. A microbiological contamination episode occurred from 19-21 August 2019 with short duration.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source from Marina del Sur Tenerife - Puerto Las Galletas. Point sources include Las Galletas wastewater treatment plant overflow, new Las Galletas submarine outfall, Las Galletas wastewater treatment plant, and existing Las Galletas submarine outfall. Barranco de Las Galletas watercourse. Potential contamination from stormwater runoff generated by heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater from pipeline ruptures or treatment plant malfunctions, and accidental spills of hydrocarbons or organic waste. Episodes of cyanobacterium Trichodesmium proliferation recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
