Playa Las Gaviotas is a coastal bathing beach located in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach spans 158 meters in length and 11 meters in width, with dark sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave action and has a tidal range of 1-3 meters, with depths reaching up to 14 meters. The beach is used for water activities including kayaking and surfing.

Coastal marine water body. Bathymetry ranges from 0 to -14 meters. Exposed to moderate wave action with a tidal range of 1-3 meters. Dark sand substrate. Water mass typology: ES70TFTIV - Punta del Roquete – Bajas del Puertito (natural coastal surface water).

Location

Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is accessible by vehicle with good road access. Parking is available but in regular condition. No pedestrian access is noted.

Facilities

Lifeguards present. Vehicle access with good condition. Disabled access available in regular condition. Parking available in regular condition. Waste bins present. Medical attention available. No public water supply, showers, foot wash stations, public telephone, megaphone, public services, changing rooms, or bars.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of faecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci). The coastal water mass ES70TFTIV maintains good ecological status (biological and physicochemical) with an overall good or better condition. No Trichodesmium cyanobacteria episodes occurred during 2004, 2010, or 2017. No risk from jellyfish or sea urchins. No macroalgae risk.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source from Santa Cruz de Tenerife fishing harbour. Point pollution sources include San Andrés wastewater treatment plant (ETAR), San Andrés relief overflow (EBAR), San Andrés submarine outfalls (scheduled for elimination and replacement). Ravine drainage from Las Gaviotas watercourse. Short-duration contamination risks include stormwater overflow from heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater discharge (pipeline breaks, network failures, emergency overflows, unauthorized discharges), fishing activity (organic residues from fish cleaning), and accidental hydrocarbon spills. Historical contamination episode on 01/06/2011 from landslide closure.
