Water

Transition water body in the Nalón estuary. Length: 810 meters. Width: 100 meters (highly variable). Macrotidal conditions with amplitude greater than 4 meters. Dark sand composition. Water renewal time: less than 7 days. Average wind speed: 5.24 m/s. Current direction: west-northwest. Wave conditions: strong. Water body identification: Nalón (20457).

Location

Located in San Juan de la Arena, municipality of Soto del Barco, Asturias, Spain. The beach is connected to the nearby town via a promenade. Parking available with over 100 spaces.

Facilities

Lifeguards, toilets, showers, disabled access, good pedestrian access, road access with over 100 parking spaces.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for bathing. Blue Flag award recipient in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Microbiological monitoring shows excellent sanitary quality at sampling point PM1. Overall contamination risk assessed as low despite proximity to Nalón River estuary discharge.

Risks

Several contamination sources identified: two ports (San Esteban de Pravia at 1.92 km and San Juan de la Arena at 1.26 km), relief valves and pumping stations of the local sanitation network, and treated wastewater discharge point from Soto del Barco EDAR at 3.49 km. However, overall contamination risk is low. Jellyfish occurrences are possible in spring-summer months but considered null risk for proliferation episodes. Macroalgae proliferation risk is low. Microalgae and cyanobacteria proliferation risk is low.
