Luanco Beach is a 280-metre sandy beach located in the Luanco urban area within the municipality of Gozón, Asturias. The beach has golden sand composition and experiences moderate wave conditions with water renewal occurring within seven days. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status in 2007, 2008, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015, and recent water quality testing has consistently shown excellent sanitary results.

Water

Coastal waters of the Western Cantabrian region. The beach is 280 metres long and 90 metres wide with minimal variation in width. Water body classification: East Coast (160007). Microtidal range (less than 4 metres). Natural origin sandy composition. Average wind speed 5.24 m/s. Current direction northwest. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Moderate wave conditions.

Luanco, Gozón municipality, Asturias, Spain. The beach is situated within the Luanco urban centre. Good pedestrian access and road access available with parking for more than 100 vehicles.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for bathing. Sanitary microbiological analysis results show excellent quality. Low risk of contamination from point sources including the Luanco wastewater treatment plant and port activities. No historical records of frequent contamination episodes.

Risks

Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis) sightings recorded: 7 specimens in August 2010 and 18 in summer 2008. Exceptional occurrence in summer 2012 with multiple jellyfish species including Velella velella, Pelagia noctiluca, and Aurelia aurita, resulting in red flag warnings on occasions. One Aequorea forskalea specimen recorded in August 2016. Risk of jellyfish proliferation episodes considered low. Port activities may cause occasional short-duration contamination episodes. Wastewater treatment plant discharge located 707 metres from the main sampling point with low risk of contamination.
