Playa Matagorda is a coastal bathing area on the island of Lanzarote in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 840 meters long and 40 meters wide, with white sand substrate and calm waters. It is exposed to wave action and has a tidal range of 1–3 meters. The water body is classified as a natural coastal surface water mass in the eastern part of Lanzarote.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on evaluation of fecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) collected over four years in accordance with RD 1341/2007. The water mass is in good ecological status. No previous contamination episodes are recorded.

Risks

Identified pollution sources: discharge at Playa Barranquillo; submarine outfall for Puerto del Carmen wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Tías and Puerto del Carmen); rainwater discharge from Lanzarote Airport; EBAR Mesana. Risk of short-duration contamination from urban rainwater runoff carrying contaminants, untreated or treated urban wastewater (outfall breaks, sewer network failures, emergency discharges, unauthorized spills), and brine discharge (desalination plant rejection). Risk of cyanobacteria proliferation (Trichodesmium episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensively in 2017). No risk from jellyfish/sea urchins or macroalgae.
