Muriola is a small artificially created beach in Barrika municipality, Bizkaia, composed of silica sand from a nearby quarry. The beach measures 45 meters in length with a low tidal area of 5,225 m² and a high tidal area of 1,737 m². It is situated in the northwestern zone of the Butroe transitional water body, partially protected from the sea and prevailing northwest winds by Gaztelu Point. The beach is isolated with seasonal assistance services and vehicle access is restricted.

Water

Transitional water body (Butroe estuary), 45 meters long and approximately 40 meters wide. Maximum tidal range of 4.70 meters and minimum of 1 meter. Calm waters with low wave exposure. Water renewal time is less than or equal to 7 days. The Butroe River has a maximum depth of 10 meters at mean tide and an average interannual flow rate of 4.7 m³/s.

Location

Barrika municipality, Bizkaia, Basque Country. Parking available but located away from the beach. The beach is accessed by pedestrians only.

Facilities

Two lifeguards (Socorristas and Hondartzainas), public showers and toilets, information panels, trash bins and containers, first aid kit and lifeguard station, medical equipment available by telephone, pedestrian access only.

Season

Seasonal assistance services available during the bathing season. Domestic animals prohibited during the bathing season.

Water Quality

Water quality classification for 2013–2015: Excellent according to Directive 2006/7/CE. Monitoring results show E. coli and intestinal enterococci concentrations consistently below the sufficient quality threshold at the central sampling point.

Risks

Main pollution source is a small stream flowing directly into the beach. Secondary influence from Butroe River. Sewage improvements implemented in 2013 eliminated previous fecal and wastewater discharge from a septic tank into the stream. An emergency overflow relief exists near the submarine outfall of the Gorliz wastewater treatment plant, which operates only during emergencies or excessive rainfall events.
