Playa de Rodiles is a 1,000 metre natural sandy beach located in the municipality of Villaviciosa in Asturias, Spain, within a transition water zone. The beach experiences macrotidal conditions with tidal amplitudes exceeding 4 metres and strong, windy wave conditions. The beach has been awarded Blue Flag status multiple times between 2007 and 2015, and its bathing water has been classified as excellent in recent years.

Water

Transition water type located in the Villaviciosa estuary within the Western Cantabrian river basin. The beach is 1,000 metres long and 295 metres wide. Water renewal time is less than 7 days. Average wind speed is 5.24 m/s with currents flowing west-northwest. The beach has a high occupancy level and semi-urban development.

Villaviciosa municipality, Asturias, Spain. The beach is accessible by road with over 100 parking spaces available, and has good pedestrian access.

Water Quality

Bathing water quality is classified as excellent. Microbiological analysis shows excellent sanitary quality. The beach has received Blue Flag distinction in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. Contamination risk is considered low overall. Potential pollution sources include an urban submarine outfall from the Rodiles wastewater treatment plant (1.3 km away), the El Puntal port (1.5 km away), local sewage relief systems and pumping stations, and a dredging material discharge point. Historical contamination episodes in the broader Villaviciosa estuary relate to inadequate sewage infrastructure in riparian settlements, though these have limited influence on the beach itself.

Risks

Low risk of short-duration contamination episodes. The area is not prone to harmful algal blooms or cyanobacteria proliferation. Macroalgal proliferation risk is low due to sandy substrate and beach orientation. Jellyfish proliferation risk is moderate; Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis) sightings have occurred as isolated specimens, and other species including umbrella jellyfish (Aurelia aurita), by-the-wind sailor (Velella velella), and sea nettle (Pelagia noctiluca) have occasionally appeared in large numbers. Multiple jellyfish incidents were recorded in summer 2012, including instances requiring red flag warnings, but no restrictions on bathing were formally imposed. Subsequent years have recorded no jellyfish sightings. A localized incident in July 2012 involved fuel pellets from a pipeline rupture at the Aboño thermal power plant.
