Playa de Salinas is a 250-metre-long coastal bathing beach in Luarca, Asturias, featuring dark sand and a variable width of approximately 75 metres. The beach experiences macrotidal conditions with a tidal range exceeding 4 metres and moderate wave action. Water renewal occurs within seven days, and the beach has a high occupancy rate in an urban setting. It has been awarded the Blue Flag designation in 2010, 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015.

Water

Coastal marine water body, 250 metres long and 75 metres wide (highly variable). Macrotidal amplitude exceeding 4 metres. Dark sand composition. Water renewal time less than 7 days. Mean wind speed 5.24 m/s. Current direction west-northwest. Moderate wave action.

Location

Luarca, municipality of Valdés in Asturias, Spain. Accessible by road with over 100 parking spaces and good pedestrian access.

Lifeguard service (Salvamento), toilets, showers, good pedestrian access, road access with over 100 parking spaces.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as Excellent for bathing. Microbiological monitoring at sampling point PM1 shows very good sanitary quality with no historical contamination episodes. Low risk of short-duration contamination events. No propensity for microalgae or cyanobacteria proliferation. Sampling conducted and quality control results indicate safe bathing conditions.

Risks

Low risk of contamination from Luarca port (561 metres away) and urban sewage discharge (685 metres away) due to beach orientation and current patterns that limit water mass arrival. Low risk of macroalgae proliferation due to sandy substrate and current direction. Jellyfish proliferation risk considered null, though Portuguese man o'war (Physalia physalis), sailing jellyfish (Velella velella), sea carnation (Pelagia noctiluca), and moon jellyfish (Aurelia aurita) have been recorded during spring-summer months. Summer 2012 was exceptional for jellyfish sightings across Asturian coast.
