San Juan de Nieva beach is a 500-metre natural sandy beach located in Castrillón municipality, Asturias, on Spain's northern coast. The beach has experienced excellent bathing water quality in recent years and received Blue Flag status in 2011, 2013, 2014, and 2015. The beach is situated near several potential pollution sources including the Avilés estuary, the port of Avilés, and an EDAR treated water discharge point, though water quality remains classified as excellent. The beach is part of a protected natural monument due to its ecologically important dune vegetation.

Water

Coastal marine water body with a length of 500 metres and highly variable width of approximately 60 metres. Golden sand composition. Water mass: Avilés Coast (160006). Macrotidal regime with tidal range exceeding 4 metres. Mean wind speed: 5.24 m/s. Current direction: west-northwest. Water renewal time: less than 7 days. Strong wave action. High occupancy degree.

Location

San Juan de Nieva, Castrillón municipality (0169), Asturias province (33), Spain. The beach is located in the Western Cantabrian hydrographic basin. Parking available with more than 100 spaces accessible by road, with good pedestrian access.

Water Quality

Water quality classified as excellent for bathing. Sanitary microbiological parameters show excellent results at monitoring point PM1. Moderate contamination risk identified due to proximity to industrialised Avilés estuary, port, and EDAR discharge point. Historical contamination episodes related to heavy metals in beach sediments. High zinc, mercury, and fluoranthene values detected in Avilés estuary transition water mass.

Risks

Moderate risk of short-duration contamination episodes from port residues, oily discharges, and fecal contamination. Avilés estuary historically industrialised with significant contamination pressures. Low risk of harmful algal and cyanobacteria proliferation. Low risk of macroalgae proliferation. Low risk of jellyfish proliferation; Portuguese man o' war (Physalia physalis) sightings are rare with mostly isolated specimens. Summer 2012 showed exceptional jellyfish incidence across Asturian coast.
