Playa San Marcos is a coastal bathing beach located in Icod de Los Vinos municipality on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach measures 85 metres in length and 20 metres in width with dark sand substrate. It is exposed to moderate wave conditions with a tidal range of 1–3 metres. The bathing zone is situated within a natural coastal surface water body classified in good ecological status.

Water Quality

Water quality classification is based on monitoring of fecal indicator bacteria (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) over four years in accordance with RD1341/2007. The underlying coastal water mass is in good ecological status with good or better overall state.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source: San Marcos fishing port. Point sources: submarine outfall of Playa San Marcos, Club Náutico Playa San Marcos, and the pressurised pipe from EB San Marcos to San Marcos wastewater treatment plant. Watercourse contamination from Barranco Preceptor and Barranco del Acero. Recorded contamination episodes: 19–20 February 2018 and 26–27 February 2018 (brief microbiological contamination); 19–20 October 2021 (brief microbiological contamination). Potential pollution sources include stormwater discharge from heavy rainfall, raw or treated urban wastewater (from pipeline ruptures or treatment plant emergencies), fishing activity organic residues, accidental hydrocarbon spills, and saltwater discharge from pool drainage. Cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium) proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
