Playa Santa Cruz de La Palma (Nueva Santa Cruz) is a coastal bathing beach located on the island of La Palma in the Canary Islands, Spain. The beach is 700 metres long and 94.81 metres wide, with fine sand substrate and moderate wave exposure. The official bathing season runs from 1 February to 30 November. The beach is situated in a natural coastal water body classified as good ecological status.

Water Quality

Water quality is classified based on faecal contamination indicators (Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci) evaluated over four years according to RD1341/2007. The coastal water masses are in good ecological status (biological and physico-chemical). Bathing water quality classification complies with Spanish regulation.

Risks

Diffuse pollution source: Santa Cruz de La Palma port. Point pollution sources: submarine outfall from Santa Cruz de La Palma wastewater treatment plant, emergency overflow from Maldonado treatment station, emergency overflow at Bar Canarias zone, overflow at Cabildo zone, and thermal power plant discharge from UNELCO - Los Guinchos. Watercourse sources: Barranco de Los Dolores and Barranco de Las Nieves. Cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium) proliferation episodes documented in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. Jellyfish and sea urchins present no risk. Macroalgae present no risk. Volcanic eruption on 24 September 2021 created additional risk from volcanic gas emissions and ash.
