Playa Sardina is a coastal bathing beach located in Puerto de Sardina, Gáldar municipality, Gran Canaria. The beach measures 80 metres in length and 40 metres in width, with fine golden sand substrate. It experiences moderate wave exposure and is situated in the northwest coastal water body which maintains good ecological status.

Water Quality

Water quality classification based on four-year evaluation of Escherichia coli and intestinal Enterococci indicators according to RD 1341/2007. Identified point pollution sources include two wastewater treatment plants (EDAR), two beach bars (EBAR), a private swimming pool discharge, and a wastewater emissary. Diffuse pollution source from fishing dock activities (transport and ship cleaning). No previous contamination episodes recorded.

Risks

Short-duration contamination risks identified: raw or treated urban wastewater (emissary breaks, sewer network failures, overflows/emergencies, unauthorized discharges) with unpredictable frequency lasting less than 72 hours; fishing activity (organic waste from fish cleaning) with unpredictable frequency lasting less than 48 hours; accidental hydrocarbon spills, organic waste, ship cleaning discharges with unpredictable frequency lasting less than 72 hours. Fitoplankton cyanobacteria (Trichodesmium) proliferation episodes recorded in 2004, 2010, and more intensely in 2017. No risk from jellyfish, sea urchins, or macroalgae.
