Sotogrande is a natural Mediterranean coastal bathing water located in Cádiz, Andalucía, influenced by Atlantic waters. The beach stretches 1,655 metres with an average width of 35 metres and dark sand composition. Bathing conditions feature moderate wave exposure dominated by easterly and east-southeasterly winds associated with levante wind. The beach has medium occupancy and is semi-urbanised with walkways and protection as a nature site.

Water

Coastal Mediterranean water body influenced by Atlantic waters. Shallow waters with sandy substrate. Tidal range is microtidal (0–2 metres). Current regime is dominant towards the northeast. Wave exposure is moderate with dominant easterly and east-southeasterly wave regime.

Location

San Roque municipality, Cádiz province, Andalucía. Access is available on foot or by car. The beach is located along the Cádiz coastline near the Guadiaro River estuary.

Facilities

Red Cross lifeguard post, rescue equipment, signage, walkways, accessible toilet facilities, showers, waste bins, cleaning service, water sports rental, nautical club, and sports marina (Puerto Deportivo Sotogrande). Disabled access is not available.

1 June to 30 September

Water Quality

Water quality classification was Excellent for all four monitoring seasons: 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2016. Short-duration contamination risk is low and microbiological in nature with a 24-hour duration. Pollution sources include diffuse land use impacts in the influence zone and a point source from the Sotogrande wastewater treatment plant (EDAR Sotogrande CA360). The Guadiaro River is also present as a surface water course.

Risks

Low risk of jellyfish, phytoplankton, and macroalgae proliferation.
